There are many things men can do to keep healthy and prevent disease.
A healthy diet and physical activity are important for everyone, but can be particularly important for men to help prevent heart disease, diabetes and some reproductive health problems.
Early treatment of some cancers affecting men is helpful in preventing the most serious effects and giving the greatest chance of cure. There are some tests that can help to detect problems early:
- Testicular self-examination. Testicular cancer has a very good cure rate if it is found and treated early. It is important that young men check their testes each month for any lumps or swellings and if concerned, should see their doctor straight away.
- PSA testing. A PSA test measures the level of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. It is a blood test that can help diagnose prostate disease. A high PSA in the blood means that something is wrong with the prostate, but it may not be prostate cancer. It is a good idea to discuss PSA testing with the doctor before having a test.
