THE BRAIN'S ROLE

-What is the hypothalamus?
-What is the pituitary gland?

The brain has an important role in controlling reproductive function.

What is the hypothalamus?

The hypothalamus is a small organ that sits at the base of the brain and secretes the hormone gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH).  GnRH is important in controlling the secretion of other hormones from the pituitary gland.

What is the pituitary gland?

The pituitary gland is a small gland (about the size of a grape) that also sits at the bottom of the brain. It releases a number of messenger hormones that act as the “keys” to activate different organs in the body including the testes. Under the influence of the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland releases luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) which are the two important messengers for the function of the testes. The production of the male sex hormone testosterone by the testis is controlled by the pituitary gland.
